Climbing Kilimanjaro: A Mission to the Roof of Africa

Our team had the honor of experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, conquering Africa’s highest peak, the legendary Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 meters. From the very first moment of the climb, the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes captivated us: from the lush green forest trails to the moonlike expanses of the higher altitudes.

During the expedition, we faced challenges such as steep slopes, drastic temperature changes, and the intense sensation of altitude fatigue. Every step, however, brought us closer to the summit and filled us with energy and determination. The feeling of achievement when we reached Uhuru Peak was unparalleled: the view stretching endlessly to the horizon, combined with the sense of pride and accomplishment of reaching a shared goal, was truly overwhelming.

Recommended Equipment & Preparation

For climbing Kilimanjaro (Marangu / Coca-Cola Route), you will need:

  • Sleeping bag – Even when sleeping in huts, temperatures can drop very low, especially at higher altitudes.

  • Good down jacket / warm jacket – For summit and nights (summit temperatures may reach -10 to -20°C with wind chill).

  • Layering clothing (thermal base, fleece, insulation) – For changing climates and altitude.

  • Sturdy trekking shoes / hiking boots – With good sole grip and durability for muddy/wet paths in forest & moorland sections.

  • Trekking poles – Aid stability, especially uphill/downhill.

  • Waterproof / windproof jacket and pants – For rain, wind, and unpredictable weather.

  • Gloves, hat, buff / scarf – For cold & wind protection at high altitudes.

  • Lightweight clothing for lower altitudes – The base area is warmer in the tropical zone.

  • Small daypack – For water, snacks, personal items, and day-layer clothing.

  • Personal items: headlamp + batteries, water/snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, map/guide, hygiene items.

  • Altitude protection – Proper hydration, nutrition, rest, slow pacing, and gradual ascent.

  • Optional: small first-aid kit, aspirin/painkillers, altitude medication (as recommended by guide), power bank for devices, gaiters (for mud/stones).

Things to Consider Before Departure

  • Although Marangu is considered “easy” and “comfortable” due to huts (no tents needed), the acclimatization profile is tighter — shorter ascent → higher risk of altitude sickness symptoms.

  • The route is the same for ascent and descent → less variety in scenery compared to other routes.

  • We travel with a trusted tour operator / guide and official permit — solo climbing is not allowed.

  • Good physical condition, patience, and proper preparation of body and equipment greatly increase chances of reaching the summit safely
