Kazbek – The Mountain of Myths and Adventure

Kazbek, also known as Mt. Kazbegi, is one of the most impressive mountains of the Caucasus, rising to 5,033 meters and dominating northern Georgia, near the border with Russia. With its towering, glaciated mass and dramatic ridges, Kazbek attracts mountaineers and nature lovers from all over the world.

6-Day Itinerary – Athens to Kazbek

Period:  On Request Basis 

Best season: July – September
• Less weather instability and safer glacier crossings.
• June and October are more unpredictable.

 

Day 1: Athens → Tbilisi → Stepantsminda (Kazbegi)

  • Flight Athens → Tbilisi (~3.5 hours).

  • Arrival at Tbilisi airport, pick-up of rental car or transfer by minivan.

  • Drive to Stepantsminda (~4 hours). Scenic route through the stunning landscapes of the Greater Caucasus.

  • Arrival, check-in at hotel or guesthouse.

  • Gear check and food supplies.

  • Overnight in Stepantsminda (~1,740 m).

 

Day 2: Stepantsminda → Gergeti Glacier (Acclimatization)

  • Easy hike for acclimatization (~3-4 hours).

  • Ascent to ~2,500-2,700 m (Gergeti Glacier or area near the chapel).

  • Overnight in a tent or mountain hut.

  • Short training and gear check for the summit.

 

Day 3: Glacier Base / Mountain Hut

  • Hike to the Kazbek mountain hut (~3,800 m).

  • Time for gear preparation: crampons, ice axes, helmet.

  • Overnight at the mountain hut.

  • Weather check and planning for the summit attempt the next day.

 

Day 4: Kazbek Summit (5,033 m) → Descent to Hut / Stepantsminda

  • Early start (~2 a.m.) for the summit.

  • Expected ascent time: 6-8 hours.

  • Summit and photos.

  • Descent to the hut or directly to Stepantsminda (~4-6 hours).

  • Overnight at hotel/guesthouse in Stepantsminda.

 

Day 5: Stepantsminda → Tbilisi

  • Rest and easy walks around the village or short hikes nearby.

  • Transfer back to Tbilisi (~4 hours).

  • Overnight in Tbilisi.

 

Day 6: Tbilisi → Athens

  • Free morning in Tbilisi (shopping, coffee, sightseeing).

  • Transfer to the airport and flight back to Athens (~3.5 hours).

 

Clothing

  • Base layers: moisture-wicking long-sleeve top & leggings

  • Windproof & waterproof jacket

  • Insulated jacket (down or synthetic)

  • Climbing pants, waterproof

  • Gloves: light gloves + warm insulated gloves

  • Hat & buff

  • Gaiters (for snow protection)

 

Footwear

  • Mountaineering boots (suitable for snow & ice)

  • Crampons (compatible with your boots)

 

Climbing Gear

  • Helmet

  • Ice axe

  • Rope (optional if guided)

  • Harness

  • Carabiners & slings

  • Crampons (already under footwear, confirm fit with boots)

 

Other Essentials

  • Backpack 40–60L

  • Sleeping bag (-10°C)

  • Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Headlamp + extra batteries

  • Water bottles

  • High-energy snacks

  • First aid kit

  • Trekking poles (optional but helpful)

 

Packing Tips

  • Keep a daypack with essentials for summit day.

  • Pack heavy items (boots, crampons) in checked luggage.

  • Keep important items (passport, tickets, snacks, warm layers) in carry-on.
