Transfer to the hotel (1 hour) located in Chora, on the east side of the island, which will be our base for the next five days.

3rd day: Chora-Lamira-Menites-Chora

In the morning we hike among the cypress trees before reaching Lamira and Menites, the villages of whitewashed jasmine covered houses. We spend the afternoon visiting the archeological museum (where we can see all that’s been found in the ancient sites of Palaiopolis and Zagora), the Modern Art Museum (one of the best of its kind in Greece, founded by the Goulandris, a rich family of ship owners) and the naval museum (history of the island of Andros). Afternoon swim. (3 hours of walking, altitude +/- 400m).

We have a pick-nick by the foot of the monastery enjoying the panoramic view of the Chora valley. In the afternoon we take the path downwards through low dry vegetation. On the way we cross an old stone bridge and some traditionally built old houses. There is time left for a swim, we spend the night in the hotel.(5 hours of walking).

5th day: Chora-Paleokastro-Kochilos-Ormos-Chora

We leave the hotel on foot and walk away from the bay of Chora on a path that climbs a series of cliffs. Then we go down in the Dipotamata gorge through a path that overlooks an embanked river. We then leave the small canyon and take steep path in order to climb to Palekastro, on the top of which stands an old fort. It was built by the Romans and was occupied by the Venetians and then the Turks. We have a pick-nick on the way. We go down to Kochilos and the Ormos beach. We have a swim and then we go back to Chora by bus or taxi. (6hours of walking; altitude +100m, -780m).

6th day: Ag.Nikolaos monastery

We take the bus to the Byzantine monastery of Ag.Nikolaos (12th century AD), which we will visit before going down to the hollow of the valley that leads to the magnificent beach of Acla where we will have a pick-nick. In the morning we have a transfer to the port of Gavrion on the west coast. (1 hour). Then we take a boat to Tinos (2 hours), the isle of dovecotes and small catholic chapels. We go to the hotel and get settled.

8th day: Ktikados-Xatzirados-Tabarados

We leave the hotel on foot. The day is partly devoted to discovering the dovecotes of Tinos which boasts more than 3000. In the old times pigeons were sold to seafarers who came to the island to stock up with supplies. Following the paved paths (kalderimia), we will visit the old villages of Ktikados, Xatzirados and Tabarados, the heart of traditional dovecote architecture. We have lunch and then we go down towards the Kionia bay on a path on the side of the hill. In the distance we can see the island of Siros. The sheep and the numerous chapels along the way remind the rural and at the same time very religious character of Tinos. We swim and then take a bus back to the hotel. (5 hours of walking; altitude +/-420m).

9th day: Chora-Xoburgo-Chora

We go up to Xoburgo to an old Byzantine fort via an old roman path. The view of the Aegean is remarkable. Then we go down to Volax, an isolated, small, sparkling white village in the middle of a plateau surrounded by hills of round granite blocks. In the middle of a maze of little streets reigns a catholic church. Indeed the coexistence of the Orthodox and Catholic Church in Tinos is one of the particularities of the island. We go on to the village named Falatados; we have lunch and return by bus. We can swim in the afternoon.(4 hours of walking; altitude+589m, -200m).

11th day: Chora-Agios Romanos-Chora

We take a northbound coastal path though thousand old terraces. From one end to the other these terraces cover more than 10000 km. We then continue towards the ancient temple of Poseidon in Kionia and on to the Agios Romanos beach. We swim and have our lunch in a small fisherman’s tavern and late in the afternoon we go back to Chora on foot. (4 hours walking; altitude +/-350m).

We swim and have lunch there. Next we walk to the Kira Xeni monastery and return to the village of Pirgos, which boasts a good number of marble sculptors. It is worthwhile visiting the studios where very strict traditional rules of working the marble still apply since the time when the Greeks were building the island of Delos. Return to Chora by bus. (3/4 hours of walking, altitude +/-470m).
